Storm Damage Is Not Always Obvious

The August 7, 2023 tornado was rated EF-2, with 130 mph peak winds along a path of about 3.8 miles near Karns. The National Weather Service in Morristown noted significant roof damage to several homes in the Lovell Cove subdivision. Knox County was then included in the federal disaster declaration for those storms (FEMA-4742-DR), which provided Public Assistance to local governments, not money for private roofs.

On April 10, 2025, storm spotters reported golf-ball-size (1.75-inch) hail in Hardin Valley and near Solway in west Knox County, 1.50 inches near Karns, and 1.00-inch hail near Bearden (Storm Prediction Center reports). A bruised shingle rarely shows from the driveway.

What Gets Done

  • Shingles lifted or gone. Strong gusts can break the seal strip, leaving tabs that crease or blow off.
  • Dents on metal parts. Marks on gutters, vents and downspouts are often the first clue that hail also struck the shingles.
  • A limb on the roof. Even a branch that slid off can crack decking or tear flashing.
  • A new drip after rain. Water right after a storm points to an opening worth finding soon.

The Cost of Storm Damage Roof Replacement

A storm-damaged roof costs about the same to replace as any other; what changes is who pays. We set no prices; these are published figures.

Timeline and Stages

  1. Stay off the roof. Photograph what you can from the ground and note the storm date.
  2. Reach out. Call (865) 555-0147 or use the form, and one independent local roofer gets your request.
  3. Inspection and write-up. The roofer checks every slope and records what it finds.
  4. Talk to your insurer. You decide whether to file, and you deal with the adjuster yourself.
  5. Contract and work. After you sign, the roofer handles any permit and schedules the job.

Why the Process Matters

Tennessee counts roofing as home improvement in Knox County, so residential jobs from $3,000 to $24,999 need a state Home Improvement license, and jobs of $25,000 or more need a state contractor license. Check the roofer at verify.tn.gov and ask for proof of insurance, written warranties, an itemized contract and local references. The Attorney General warns against paying more than one-third up front or signing over your whole insurance check before the work is done.

What Your Insurer Will Ask For

Your policy sets the claim steps, so ask your agent what it requires. A roofer can document the damage it finds, and you can share that record. The claim itself stays between you and your insurer. Tennessee adds these protections on insurance-paid roofing contracts:

  • Three business days after a denial. If your insurer says in writing that all or part of the claim is not covered, you can cancel until midnight of the third business day after you receive that notice (§ 62-6-602).
  • No payment before coverage. The roofer cannot require payment until your insurer confirms coverage in writing or that window has passed, apart from emergency repairs you approved in writing. A refund is due within 10 business days of a cancellation (§ 62-6-604).
  • No public adjusting. A roofer cannot act as your public adjuster (§ 62-6-605).

Good to Know

Will you help with my insurance claim?

No. Roof Replacement Knoxville TN is a referral service only. It does not file, manage or negotiate claims and does no roofing. It passes your request to one independent local roofer, who can record the damage. Roofers may pay us for referrals; you never pay for one.

Did the April 2025 hail hit my street?

Spotter reports mark single points, so they cannot confirm hail on your street. Sizes reported that day ranged from 1.00 inch near Bearden to 1.75 inches in Hardin Valley. An inspection on your own roof is the reliable answer.

Does storm damage always mean a new roof?

Not always. Damage limited to one slope or a few shingles can sometimes be repaired, while widespread bruising often tips the decision toward replacement. The repair-or-replace quiz asks five quick questions and points you to a sensible next step.

Will storm work need a permit?

Neither local office publishes a re-roof rule, so ask your roofer and confirm with the office for your address. Inside city limits, call City of Knoxville Plans Review and Inspections at (865) 215-4311; elsewhere in the county, Knox County Codes Administration at 865-215-2325. The roofer handles any permit.
